“I smile, knowing as long as I don’t try to chase it, everything will be alright.”
With spirited humor, thought-provoking anecdotes and witty connections to real life, Jason Patterson weaves the story of his love for the hunt together, from its humble beginnings near his grandfather’s home to early morning ventures, longing for more than just a fin or feather, but a deeper purpose for life. His journal of musings, as he transitioned from one hunting season to another, give the reader a front-row seat to the captivating beauty of nature, the challenging qualities of the animal species and how to find satisfaction when those two collide.
The characters met are few, yet vital, ranging from a faithful dog named Cyrus, to best friends who helped pave the way for Patterson’s passionate search to hunt with excellence. We are introduced to a compassionate wife, three energetic daughters and a family legacy that gave Patterson not only a foundation of faith and loyalty, but companionship, truth and delight. We experience each player in his chronicle as intricate pieces of the grand puzzle, setting a beautiful tapestry to complement the wonder of the outdoors.
Be prepared to laugh, cry, be fascinated and find that individual place of solitude, in a search to not chase the wind mindlessly, instead, smile as it passes, knowing those places are permanent reminders of a journey worth living to the full.

Awesome book, and worth reading multiple times. I especially enjoyed reading Jason's discussion of how his appreciation for hunting and the outdoors has evolved; from getting into it, getting a dog and how his dog enriched his life, hunting as a single guy, and finally as a dad with his children. Definitely parallels my experience - whether you're an avid hunter or just trying to understand someone who is..this is a great way to spend a few hours. Thanks Jason.Product details

Shades of Ecclesiastes Essays from a Texas Sportsman eBook Jason Patterson Reviews
Like many things in life we obtain enjoyment from anticipation and planning the journey. Walking beside this sportsman you begin to understand why he grows and develops as a hunter, father, husband and a companion. We learn some things about faith and the outdoors that are such a vital part of our being. There is something in this book for everyone!
I feel like this would be a real pleasure for sportsmen and non sportsmen alike. Very well written and easy to relate to. A great explanation of why we do what we do and why we live doing it so much.
Mr pattetson's story telling brings back memories of my journies in the outdoors. I think any hunter can relate to his experiences and probably will reflect on their own journey.
I first met Jason Patterson twenty-one years ago. He surprised me then, and he has surprised me now. I thoroughly enjoyed reading his book and his story-telling style. During my read, I kept wondering about the book title. I get it now. Good job, Mr. Patterson, sir; from Weatherford taking history - social security number - we'll, I'll stop there...
From one of your Pale Riders
I think James Patterson captures the true reason people hunt and fish, to find time to be alone and drink in the beauty of God's creation. It explains the joy of the experience in a wonderful way that is easy to relate too.
I am not a hunter or a sportsman but I do love the outdoors. The writer of the book has a keen eye for nature and how to describe his surroundings as he weaves the story of the hunt with family history and life experiences all into one package. He reels you in with personal tidbits from his life and the lives of those who have come before him. It is no coincidence that this all has a greater meaning to him as uses the quiet time of the fishing or hunting or camping experience to seek answers to life questions and enjoy nature at its best.
The High School Teacher Mr. John Patterson writes- brightly and boldly about his reflections and memories of waterfowl hunting, in his part of central Texas. It is well written and structured very succinctly in a story telling style which is endearing, and reflects upon the writers historical reflections of friends, family and regional area in which he was reared.
I am giving his book as a Christmas Present, it is just- that good, and as someone who writes and judges writing contests nationally, he should write more in the future.
