This is an excellent 19th-century adventure story. One must suspend belief about the Sargasso Sea of wrecks portrayed, of course, but if you treat the story as a fantasy it holds up really well. It is basically the story of one man, with a few other characters in the first chapters. The one man is a remarkably tough young mechanical engineer who, through a combination of idealism, initial innocence and pure bad luck finds himself on a derelict carried by currents into the continent of derelicts at the center of the terrible, weed-strangled Sargasso Sea, and of his efforts to survive and escape, which apparently no one else has done.
